Dakar, 20 mars (APS) – L’ancienne nageuse zimbabwéenne, Kirsty Coventry, a été élue, jeudi, à Costa Navarino (Grèce), présidente du Comité international olympique (CIO) pour un mandat de huit ans.

Agée de 41 ans, Kirsty Coventry devient la première femme et la première Africaine à accéder à ce poste, succédant ainsi à l’Allemand Thomas Bach.

Elu en 2013 et réélu en 2021, Thomas Bach va quitter son poste de président du CIO le 23 juin.

Sept candidats dont le Français David Lappartient, l’Espagnol Juan Antonio Samaranch Junior et le Britannique Sebastian Coe, étaient en lice lors de cette élection.

Le mandat de Kirsty Coventry démarre le 24 juin 2025.

L’ancienne nageuse a remporté sept médailles dont deux en or en cinq éditions des JO.

Ministre zimbabwéenne des Sports depuis 2019, elle a intégré le CIO en 2013, où elle préside la commission des athlètes.
